High-voltage filter capacitor banks

Filter Capacitor Banks (further banks) are used for reactive power compensation in networks with increased content of higher harmonics components.

To protect capacitors from a harmful influence of higher harmonics the banks are completed with anti-resonance throttles. The principle of bank operation is based on detuning of oscillating contour “power transformer – bank” to avoid a resonance phenomenon occurrence and capacitors failure. The main peculiarity of filter banks is partial harmonics suppression close to detuning frequency. Banks calculation is carried out on the basis of many factors accounting not only the values themselves and types of harmonics but also the degree of its influence on oscillating system “capacitor bank – power transformer”.

Most frequently used throttles:

134 Hz -14% (capacitors protection from all harmonics and suppression of 3rd harmonic);
189 Hz – 7% (capacitors protection from harmonics starting from 5th and its suppression);
210 Hz – 5,67 % (capacitors protection from harmonics starting from 7th and its suppression).
